The
pole of the Floresta dos Guarás is located at the Amazon region
of Maranhão. The region is a natural sanctuary formed by islands,
bays, rivers and wetlands. Its name is taken from a local bird with
red feathers, very common in the region. It ecompasses the municipalities
of Cedral, Mirinzal and Porto Rico do Maranhão.
Attractions
The Floresta dos Guarás is not a tourist destination even though
nature lovers are starting to discover its attractions: the rain forest,
rivers, wildlife and rich flora. A major attraction is the Ilha dos
Lençóis, in Cururupu. It is entirely made of sand which
creates an astonishing landscape. The local myth says that Dom Sebastião,
King of Portugal, lives in the island as an enchanted bull, with a star
on its forehead.

Parcel de Manuel Luís is the home of thousands of different species
of sea living creatures that can be only reached by experienced divers.
O quilombo de Frechal
A symbol of slave resistance in Maranhão is located in Mirinzal.
Also interesting are the estaleiros where boats are made using traditional
techniques.
