Luís region is a great place to explore the cultural and religious
manifestations. In São Luís, (the State capital), the
Centro Historico with museums, theaters, a multitude of cultural celebrations
is a place for both leisure and learning. The same can be said for Alcantara
and São Jose de Ribamar, where some of the State's most important
religious celebrations take place.
São
Luís - A trip to São Luís is worthwhile any time
of the year. However, it is in June that the most important popular
celebrations take place honoring Santo Antonio, São João,
São Pedro e São Macal. At this time of the year the city
is like one great party.
Followers of Sao Jose
de Ribamar gather every year in October to celebrate and worship, at
the City named after the saint, located 32 kilometers from Sao Luis
In Alcantara, the Festa
de Sao Benedito, an event predominantly of African descent origin, is
celebrated on the second Sunday in August with hundreds of people line
up on a procession throughout the streets of the historic City, symbolizing
the renewal of their faith.
Also in Alcantara, the
Festa do Divino, another religious celebration, takes place in May,
with lots of people, music, food and typical costumes representative
of the local history. The Festa do Divino is celebrated throughout the
State but it is in Alcantara that it is presented in all its glamour
attracting hundreds of tourists every year.
